LEVEL DESIGN WORKSHOP

COMMODORE 64 PROGRAMS

This is a very special section. My first computer was a Commodore 64 that I bought in 1988, and I did a lot of programming on it. Here you have the programs that I've been able to recover so far, converted in D64 format: you can try them on an emulator such as CCS64 or VICE, or transfer them to a floppy disk and play them on the actual hardware they were written for. This section will likely grow as I have time to delve deeper into my stash of floppy disks, searching for more material that is worth to be preserved.

Micromusic

A simple music program that allows to play the C64 like a piano. This was actually an enhanced version of the program found in the C64 user's manual, and can be considered as little more as an experiment in BASIC programming.

Data Base

I wrote this program following a request from one of my teachers: we had a C64 at my secondary school, which was mostly used as word processor, and a free data base management program would have been welcome. Not sure if they ever used it, though.

Battleships

A compact, minimalist rendition of the classic strategy guessing game. Three different board types are available. Differently from the original game, ships can also be arranged diagonally.

Connect-4

One of the few BASIC programs in which I used sprites in combination with redefined characters. The computer opponent is quite slow, but it does provide a decent challenge. Connect-4 also features simple animations, sound effects and even music.

Nibbler

Just yet another Snake clone. The game has 10 levels with different mazes, after which the levels repeat with increased difficulty.

Mastermind

The classic code-breaking game. In this version there are eight different colors and no duplicates. The player earns points from successfully breaking the code, and the program keeps track of the highest score.

Astrolab

This astronomy program allows to display the sky at any time and place. Because of the limitations of using hi-res in BASIC, the drawing process is painfully slow, and due to memory constraints, out of the 88 existing constellations only 48 can be displayed.

Barriers

Pilot your spacecraft through dangerous space avoiding contact with moving barriers and aliens. The program is written part in BASIC and part in machine language. There are 9 levels of increasing difficulty, each with a different color scheme and set of aliens.

World Conquest

This strategy game is a modern reinterpretation of Risk in which the territories have economic attributes that influence the gameplay, making some regions more productive than others. Special features include nuclear strike, war credits and a rudimentary upgrade system.
